You didn't like The Rise of Skywalker, eh? I loved it, so if you're not with me, then you are my enemy. I am a Sith, and we only deal in absolutes. 😜
Seriously though, I find that most of the criticisms leveled at The Rise of Skywalker (including yours about Disney running to J.J. Abrams with lots of cash) are similar to thoughts that I had about The Force Awakens, my least favorite of the saga. (Don't get me wrong; I still think it's a near-masterpiece because it's very well made and because of the characters, old and new.) It was the first Star Wars movie where I felt like I was being patronized. Most people cite Return of the Jedi because of the Ewoks or The Phantom Menace because of the kiddie stuff; I guess that's another reason why I'm a weird fan. I think they bowed down to the prequel haters who complained that the trilogy ruined their childhoods. That's just my opinion.
You know, you raise indirectly an interesting question. If Disney called you in 2012 and said we want you to write Episode VII, what would it look like?
Soon after they announced the sequel trilogy, I came up with a broad story idea for it, just for fun, involving Darth Plagieus. Basically, Palpatine was his apprentice and Plagieus foresaw the betrayal but he let it happen because he knew Palpatine would succeed in wiping out most of the Jedi. He also saw that Palpatine would be killed by the Chosen One (Anakin), so he enacted a contingency plan of manipulating the midi-chlorians to create Dark Side beings on a secret Sith planet (sound kinda familiar?). However, the beings wouldn't be Sith but would create a new and better Dark Side order and then attack the New Republic once they were ready. The heroes would discover their origins gradually by the final film and then destroy them once and for all. Like I said, it was for fun so I didn't bother working out the details beyond what I just told you.
To answer your specific question, I guess Episode VII would show the New Republic in newfound peace and prosperity with Luke having a small but dedicated New Jedi Order. Then, those mysterious evil beings would come out of nowhere and disrupt all that, creating havoc throughout the galaxy and starting a new war.
Congratulations to three years, kemo sabe. Don't forget us little people when you're running Lucasfilm.
If Filoni ever gave me even a little bit of power, I’m calling you to write the Kylo Boomhauer series.
"You sure about that?"
where does this guy get off thinking the world needs more Star Wars? All I can do is quote kylo: :More!
