Bright suns and welcome back to the Death Star Human Resources Department Newsletter. Just a heads up, DSHR is going on a little bit of a summer break. I had been kicking around the idea of doing this anyway, but some stuff has come up in the real world that requires my attention and there’s not a whole lot happening in Star Wars right now, so it seems like a good time. So today we’ve got a roundup of Star Wars news from San Diego Comic Con. And then I’ll be back on August 23rd with a new Death Star Human Resources Department Newsletter.
I feel a little bad doing this, there's been an influx of new subscribers on the last couple weeks. I promise I’ll be back soon. San Diego Comic Con Roundup
As I mentioned above, I’m taking a few weeks off. Right now as I’m typing, San Diego Comic Con is wrapping. There wasn’t a ton of Star Wars news. With Disney D23 next month and Celebration in just over 8 months (!!!) away, you have to figure the really big announcements are going to be saved for those events. Mostly it seemed to be about the traveling Star Wars Experience that kicks off next year in Philadelphia and an update on new Star Wars books and comics.
As for books, Chelsea Zukowski over at Space Wizards Book Club has a great rundown of what was announced. If you’re a fan of Star Wars books, you absolutely should be subscribed to SWBC.
And specifically, Chelsea is contributing to Star Wars: A Celebration which is going to be a 50th anniversary reference book. Very cool!
There’s going to be a lot of cool books and comics in the next year. I’m most excited about Reign of the Empire: Edge of the Abyss which comes out in about 6 weeks. The sequel to the excellent Reign of the Empire: Mask of Fear. If you liked Andor and Rogue One, go read Mask of Fear.
If you’re into Star Wars videogames, the panel for “Zero Company” revealed all the voice actors and just how many Republic credits you can drop on the game. The list of voice actors and actresses has a few familiar names to Star Wars fans. Dee Bradley Baker is best known for voicing the Clone Troopers, although many people are saying his best work is Nubs in Young Jedi Adventures. Matt Lanter voiced Anakin Skywalker in a ton of Clone Wars episodes.
And if you just happen to have a $299.99 burning a hole in your Jedi robes, you can pick up Zero Company: Collectors Edition.
Not gonna lie, the Black Series electronic thermal detonator is pretty cool. But not $299.99 cool.
The Star Wars experience, called Star Wars: The Experience opens up in Philadelphia next February, the first city on it’s 5 year tour. I was hoping part of the announcements at SDCC would be the tour schedule. I’ve got no beef with Philly but I’ve already got Celebration the calendar next year and my stash of Republic credits after that might be a little low. But we did get a little more information about what visitors are going to see along with some artistic renderings. How cool does this sound?
Told through an extraordinary collection of more than 70 artifacts — many of them on view for the first time from Lucasfilm — the exhibit invites you to take a closer look at legendary screen-used pieces including Darth Maul’s lightsaber hilt and Darth Vader’s menacing armor, as well as a selection of fan-favorite aliens, droids, and creatures, including the Mandalorian’s faithful companion Grogu (from Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, on digital now), and the droid duo that started it all, R2-D2 and C-3PO. A celebration of the depth and breadth of storytelling in the galaxy far, far away, the exhibition also includes vehicles like a full-sized speeder bike and original props from Andor, the critically-acclaimed and Emmy and Peabody Award-winning Disney+ series.
I haven’t watched this yet, but someone was nice enough to record the panel hosted by Ashley Eckstein.
A long-lost Star Wars series is finally going to make it’s official debut later this fall at the Lucas Museum. No, not Star Wars: Underworld. Instead the what is maybe the only Star Wars comedy show, Star Wars: Detours is finally going to see completed episodes get an official release.
As part of a San Diego Comic-Con panel covering the opening of Lucas Museum of Narrative Art later this year, guest Seth Green discussed his collaboration with George Lucas over several years. Green revealed that their collaborative, non-canon animated comedy series Star Wars Detours, which has never been released, is going to have multiple completed episodes featured as part of the museum.

Green previously revealed that 39 episodes of the series had been fully-completed, with another 62 episodes scripted at the time the plug was pulled as a result of the Disney acquisition and shifting priorities at Lucasfilm. A full episode leaked on Reddit a few years ago before being taken down by Lucasfilm themselves. Voice talent attached to the series included Felicia Day, Donald Faison, Seth MacFarlane, Andy Richter, Jennifer Hale, Zachary Levi, and Seth Green himself.
In a very weird way, it does make sense for the Lucas Museum. Last year at SDCC, George talked about the museum and how he felt that narrative art doesn’t get the same respect as say, paintings or whatever we consider “traditional” art. Something like Detours would absolutely fit into the unappreciated art that George is trying to highlight. And while the museum is not a Star Wars museum, I think that George also knows if people go to a Lucas Museum and there isn’t any Star Wars stuff, there’s going to be a riot that makes the Ghorman Massacre look like a tea party.
And speaking of Star Wars and humor, Rick Moranis made an appearance for the Spaceballs 2 panel. For those who don’t know, Moranis basically retired from acting in 1997 to focus on raising his kids. He even passed on the Ghostbusters reboot in 2016. So getting him back under the (Dark) helmet was a pretty big deal. And sometimes, you just have to take a role so you’ll get left alone.
“The truth is, I had to say yes to this thing,” said Moranis, after taking his seat on stage following an intro where some goons had to literally comb the audience, in a nod to a memorable gag from the original movie, in order to find him. “It was the only way I could get Josh Gad to stop texting me.”
Just in case you want to watch Spaceballs: The Panel, as far as I can tell this is more or less the whole thing.
I am truly, truly excited for Spaceballs 2. Maybe even more than Starfighter? I don’t know. I can’t say for sure but what I can say for sure is I am absolutely at Spaceballs 2 on opening night.
Hopefully you’re caught up on most of the news from SDCC. I think Hasbro had some announcements in there as well. But the DSHR summer vacation is starting, so I’ll see you all in a few weeks.
